Allegory on death and transience of life, Jacob de Gheyn (II) (workshop or), 1599 Canvas Print
In a round tent, a putto is blowing bubbles ('homo bulla' - 'Man is a bubble' - stands on the edge of the niche he is sitting in), flanked by an emperor and a farmworker. Above the putto a representation of the Last Judgement. At the top left a cartouche with a round representation of the Fall; at the top right a cartouche with a round representation of the Crucifixion. In the foreground are two corpses (the emperor and the peasant, according to the broken crown at the far left front and the battered shovel in the front right). On the left in the foreground also a vase with flowers; on the right a vase from which smoke rises and a broken hourglass. With explanatory texts that refer to death (which makes no distinction between the states) and the transience of human life. With Latin caption in the form of four quatrains.
