Allegory on the past eighteenth century, 1799, Ludwig Gottlieb Portman, 1807 Canvas Print
Allegory on the past eighteenth century, 1799. Central to the personification of religion at an altar, The Time reveals above a column on which the most important events of the past century stand. These are (from top to bottom): Death of William III (1702); Stadholdership dedicated to William IV (1747); Battle of the Dogger Bank (1781); Arrest of Princess Wilhelmina at Goejanverwellesluis (1787); Prince Frederick wounded in the Battle of Wervik (1793) and William's Departure to England (1795). On the right, History points out these cases to a young man. On the left, geniuses of the arts and sciences hang medals of the societies founded in this century on a tree. The print is accompanied by a text sheet with an explanation and price list from the publisher.
