Annunciation / The Man between Ingenuity and Christ, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural framing. On the left the proclamation to Mary by the angel Gabriel with God the Father and the Holy Spirit as a dove. The performance depicts the incarnation of Christ. On the right Man dressed in habijt and with rosary between the personification of the blind Ingenuity and Christ. Man is deaf to the words of Christ and listens to the inblazings of the Ingenuity to rely on his good works. Under both performances a four-line verse in Lower Dutch and a four-line text in Latin. Numbers 13 and 14 from a reformatory series about the sinfulness and justification of man.
