Story was commander of the squadron of the Batavian fleet that, after mutiny among the Orange-minded crew, surrendered to the British on August 30, 1799 without firing a shot. This event is known as the Vlieter incident. The crying Story with in his right hand a paper on which (in English) it says that 'the traitors have refused to fight'.
