Cartoon on the regents of Amsterdam, 1690, anonymous, 1690 Canvas Print
Cartoon on the regents of Amsterdam, 1690: Groothans and the Privilege-seeker. The Privilege-seeker (the bourgeoisie of Amsterdam) kneels pleadingly and crying with a yoke on his shoulders at a large city lantern (with which he is looking for privileges), while on the left Groothans (a regent) offers him a book (possibly a privilege book). On the left a pile of privileges of Amsterdam on which rats gnaw and against which a dog pees. In the background on the right a funeral procession in a cemetery referred to as: desolate Kercof for the Previlegie. On the sheet below the plate a corresponding text in three columns ending with a list of ten commandments.
