Cave of Plato, Joseph Mulder (possibly), 1604 Canvas Print

Cave of Plato, Joseph Mulder (possibly), 1604 Canvas Print

Plato's cave, depicted as a chamber of the heart. The cave is divided in two by a large wall. On the wall are all kinds of personifications (Love, Hope, Faith, Greed, Drunkenness, Fame, etc.). A fire pit behind these personifications casts their shadows on the cave wall. In the foreground on the right is a large group of people, of different positions and religions. They are arguing, but only look at the shadows of the personifications. They are located in the shadow of the wall. On the left in the foreground of the cave is a group of scholars in the light. They too debate, but look at the personifications and the fire pot. Two scholars try to convince the people behind the wall to step into the light. In the background a narrow passage to the world outside the cave. Only three men noticed the passageway and went through. They are located outdoors. The print has a Latin inscription with a Bible quote and an assignment.
