City plan in relief of the city of Breda, Cornelis van Bergen (attributed to), 1750 - 1800 Canvas Print
City plan in relief of the city of Breda. Model of a fortified town surrounded by green ramparts and a moat. Outside the moat, the plank on which the whole is mounted is painted gray. All houses and rows of houses are cut separately from wood, painted round with white lines to indicate very coarsely the brick structure, black windows and doors, roofs red or green-gray. Trees and shrubs made of a spritely kind of rope. Very detailed, with all the garden walls, poles fields and fences, on the ramparts cannons. Model of the fortress Breda, at the end of the 17th century. The war that raged in the Republic from 1672 onwards forced those in power to draw attention to the national defense. By order of stadholder William III, the outdated fortifications around cities were modernized. The model shows the city of Breda with the fortifications that were built in 1682. The houses in the model are carved from wood. The ramparts are made of clay.
