De arts als mens, Hendrick Goltzius (workshop of), 1596 - 1652 Canvas Print

In a house, a man sits by the fireplace next to his bed, family members caring around him. A doctor sits next to him talking. In the room on the right you can see what has happened to the man since his fall (see the first two prints of the series): his head wound has been taken care of and he has walked on crutches. In the foreground again the doctor, standing amid books and medical instruments. Latin and Greek texts engraved under the performance and (outside the plate edge but on the same sheet) a printed Dutch text, explaining that the doctor is treated like an ordinary person when the sick person is almost cured. This print is part of a series of four prints depicting how the doctor is considered and appreciated during his visit to a sick person: upon entering as a god, after the first aid as an angel, in healing as a human being and when to pay as a devil.
