Death of Dido, Gerard de Lairesse, 1668 Canvas Print

Death of Dido, Gerard de Lairesse, 1668 Canvas Print

Dido pierced herself with the sword of Aeneas after her lover left by boat. She is at the stake, made up of possessions of Aeneas, which she had erected herself. Iris, Juno's female messenger, has appeared behind Dido to cut off a lock of hair. On the left, Dido's sister Anna stands in great despair. In the margin there is a two-line caption in Dutch. This illustration was made for the third act of the mourning game "Didoos Doot" (1668), written by Andries Pels. The print is part of a four-part series with scenes from this tragedy.
