Diorama of a Carib Camp, Gerrit Schouten, 1810 Canvas Print

Diorama of a Caribbean camp with the construction of a hut. The settlement is located on a river and consists of two cabins and a hut under construction. The shallow wooden cabinet has ascending bottom, rectangular sides and a flat attic. The back of the cabinet is painted on the inside with trees, white clouds and a blue sky. The sides and top are painted white. From left to right a small cabin with an open construction and a closed rear. In the cabin there is a barbakot without fire. There is a hammock and a brown patch hangs over the left bar. In addition, a hut is under construction: a dome-shaped skeleton is lined with still green palm leaves. There are three men working around the cabin. The front man wears a shawl (salempoeris). Behind the cabin is a man with black hair and next to it is a man kneeling. He's carrying a knife in his seat belt. In front of them are new materials for the cabin. In the foreground on the left the bank of the river, overgrown with grass. Aquatic plants float in the water. A canoe has just been docked with three people inside. The figures are reflected in the green water, which is suggested in the diorama by a painted glass plate. In the boat is a woman with long hair and leg straps and there is a woman with long hair and black pants on it. This woman wears a mat of braided leaves. There is also a man, somewhat huddled, on the right side of the boat. On the edge of the boat is a green parrot. In the boat are two braided pagals (box-shaped baskets with a sliding lid) with Caribbean geometric motifs. There's a dog on the shore. In the distance, a boy comes running in with a bow and arrow and his loot: an iguana. A man comes home from hunting. He carries a weitas, a rifle and a white spotted animal (a hare or small deer). Some trees are scattered between the huts and on the bank there is a tall tree with a wide crown. There is a rope on this tree to be able to moor boats. By the river is a man with a fishing rod and a fish he just caught. In front of him is a man with crossed arms, in his hands he holds a bread and a knife. He wears a feather tan and a salempoeris. In front of the man, on the ground, is a square piece of leaf with food on it. At his feet is a spotted dog. On the right is a hut with a closed wall on which hammocks hang. The hut is made up of eight poles, four on either side, on which crossbars rest. The roof is supported by two high poles at the front and rear. The sloping roof is covered with leaves. In one of the hammocks in the cabin is a woman with a baby in a sling. Here the operations from cassava to bread are shown. We see the trough-shaped container used to grate the cassava tubers. On the right side of the hut are two women stomping cassava into flour. An African woman has a stick or pestle in her hand and another woman is busy with a pestle in a jar. A woman sieves cassava flour over a jar. She's sitting on a tree trunk and next to her is a dog. Another woman, dressed in blue and black, bakes cassava bread on a round plate over a fire. There are pieces of that bread on a leaf. For example, all stages of the processing from cassava to bread can be seen in the diorama. On the ground are bowls and a jug. In front of the right style of the hut is a high earthen pot with a geometric motif. On the edge is a parrot and in the foreground are three chickens. A blue-and-black salempoeris hangs over the front crossbar of the hut. On one of the styles on the left hangs a hand bakove (bananas) and on the front style hangs a basket. The soil is made of white sand and runs slightly sloping into the woods in the distance. In the background on the right is a chipped tree stump.
