Dismas and Gestas, the Good and the Bad Thieves, Meester van het Sint-Anna-altaar in Kalkar (attributed to), c. 1490 - c. 1510 Canvas Print
The evil killer, Gestas, is hanged in a tormented position, with his twisted, beardless face once averted from Christ and with his mouth open, from which his soul is pulled out by the now missing devil. His arms are bent over the crotch at the top and secured with a bundle of cords. His clothes are richer than dysmas's (BK-2014-20-1), with a closed jacket, which is held together with rope at the front and a shirt underneath. His long stockings – so-called hosses – are torn on the left knee and at the bottom his feet protrude. Over his hozen, the man wears a braguette or pubic hood ('kullezak') that is tied to his coat with strings.
