Domestic altar with the Last Supper, anonymous, c. 1550 Canvas Print
The altar is made up of a postament, a quadrangle middle piece and a main frame with crowning. On the postament, which is encropted in the corners, are two alabaster columns with composite capitals, which with the pilasters behind them carry an equally encropped-up main frame. They enclose a relief with the Last Supper, on the sides and encased at the top in a narrow egg frame. Supper takes place in an interior, the back wall of which is formed from round arches, resting on fluted pilasters. Against this is the throne, on which Christ is seated with John in front of him. They sit in the midst of the apostles at a set table, on which there are square 'pewter' slices, a bowl with lamb, a chalice and bread. On the benches in front of the table sit three apostles, including Judas, recognizable by the money pouch, to whom Christ gives the bread. In the foreground on the right a jug and on the left a lampet jug. In the crowning a relief rounded from above, on which Mary, sitting on clouds, with the Child on a cloud on the right in front of her outstretched arm and on the left John with the lamb. Mary holds a fruit in every hand. The postament has a relief with the prefiguration of the Eucharist: on the left is the king-priest Melchisedek with bread and wine opposite abraham, who is rushing at him in a pseudo-Roman costume. He announces melchisedek his victory over Kedor-Laomer and the Kings. Behind Abraham a man holds a prancing horse by the rein, to his right his only horsemen are wrapped in infighting; at the bottom a defeated warrior and a walking dog. On both encroppings left and right reliefs with respectively a male and a female nude, fruit guitars ceaseing. To the left and right of the encroppings respectively a man in Roman costume and a nude with helmet, both in roll work; on the sides of the crowning cartouches. The architrave shows a narrow decorative relief: in the middle a mascaron in trench tape, from which acanthus vines with flowers spring on both sides, on which an oblique faun and fauns spring; on the encroppings rollwork with masks and fesses. The frame around the relief in the crowning is connected by means of rollwork to a fence behind it; on either side of it a deflected chimère and on top of two standing putti, each holding a ribbon in both hands, on which fruits hang. Between the two putti a mascaron in rolling work, topped by a kind of vase with fruits. The openwork cheeks are each formed from a chimère, connected by rolling work to a satyr above it, which holds a ribbon with fruits. Plinth and architrave are decorated with rosettes.
