Dovecote full of flying jesters, Johann Theodor de Bry, 1596 Canvas Print
A dovecote is in the water, but here not full of pigeons, but full of men who have all been relegated to jester and fall from the dovecote into the water. On either side of it, on the walle side, are two beautifully dressed ladies: one sieves men, the other fishes in the men's pond. Both, according to the texts in the accompanying epigram, have been too picky when it comes to the choice of men. The meagre consequence is that they are ultimately left alone.
