Dutch Ships in a Calm Sea, Willem van de Velde (II), c. 1665 Canvas Print

There are six warships on a vast, calm sea. The sails are hoisted, the anchors are lifted. The mirror of the ship on the right in the foreground is decorated with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, held up by two standing lions. This is probably part of a war fleet preparing to leave. A sloop with decent figures, probably from the Admiralty, sails under trumpets and salute shots past the ships, while a little further on the last provisions and crew are still taken on board. Striking is the enormous accuracy in the representation of details: rigging, sailing and cannons.
