Fan painting Yama uba and kintaro, Kawanabe Kyôsai, c. 1860 - 1889 Canvas Print

Signed representation on paper painted on both sides on the mounted bamboo fan; in a silk cloth in a wooden box. The front depicts an old woman with devilish features, suckling a blushing pink boy at the breast; around her a rocky landscape lit by the moon with a persimmon fruit on a branch in a basket. The back with flowing water in a rocky landscape. Depictions on the front and back connect to each other when viewed against the light. The box is signed by the owner, probably Fujisawa Nangaku (1842-1920).
