Flask, anonymous, 1868 Canvas Print
The bottle consists of a spherical vase, encased in a network of eight vertical and three horizontal threads. Oval cabochons, inlaid with gemstone, are mounted at four of the intersections of the vertical and lower and upper wires and at all eight intersections of the vertical and middle wires. The vertical threads end at the bottom in capricious roots attached to a arched band with a serrated top edge, which encloses the underside of the vase. The foot is made up of a wide flat edge and an indented, straight section, on which in blue enamel the Gothic letters WILLIAM. BURGES. me. ff. MDCCCLXVIII have been saved. The vertical threads end at the top in three three-leaf floral motifs attached to a wide band that encloses the top edge of the vase. On top and bottom are eight oval cabochons, inlaid with gemstone, mounted, bordered at the top and bottom by an imposed wire. Above is a band imposed with a repetitive pattern of fleur de lys under a wire. The convex, hinged lid has a rocky, green enamelled top, on which a spider is mounted. Its body consists of an oval cabochon, inlaid with a pearl.
