Frenzy, Artus Quellinus (I) (attributed to), c. 1660 Canvas Print
The insane one sits naked on a tree stump-like, straw-covered elevation on a square plinth. She has the curved left leg forward with the foot briefly over the plinth, the right one is placed diagonally backwards. She pulls her hair with both hands, bending the upper body to one side, so that the left hand comes up and the right one below the head. The tongue protrudes from the wide-open mouth, in which the upper row of teeth becomes visible. On the back of the head, the hair is held together in a bun, on which a braid depends. From her right forearm, a cloth runs under the legs and is knocked back over the left leg, covering the lap. A second cloth is draped over the back of the elevation. The square pedestal with profiled base and cover plate shows on each side a profiled deep-lying panel, in which a smaller window. From each window protrudes the head of an insane: a gestured, classic-looking man's head with band around the head, mustache and open mouth and four fingers protruding forward under the chin; on the opposite side a bald-headed man's head; on both other sides probably women's heads, one of which is on the left panel with cloth over the head, half opened mouth and four fingers protruding under the chin, the other with separated hair and a cloth on the back of the head.
