Frisian with the punishment of Niobe, Jan Saenredam, 1594 Canvas Print

Print with a frieze from eight plates. The depiction of the frieze contains four scenes that tell the story of Niobe. Niobe was the daughter of Tanatalus. During the festivities in Thebe in honor of Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana, Niobe accuses the Thebans of sacrificing to Latona (center and right). The goddess Latona complains to her two children, who then avenge her honor by killing Niobe's fourteen children with arrows (middle and left). On the far left is Niobe who is trying to protect her children. The print has a Latin caption per plate.
