On Wednesday 16 October 1940, a serious bus accident took place in Groningen at the train crossing at Ranum between Winsum and Baflo. Thirteen workers were killed, who were on their way to the poldering work at De Slikken. Nine of the thirteen victims were buried together at the Groninger Zuider cemetery on Saturday 19 October 1940. Representative of the State Commissioner for Groningen Dr.C. Conring spoke on behalf of the German authorities. While a wreath was laid by officers of the German weather force. Among those present were the mayor of Groningen Mr. P.W.J.H. Cort van der Linden and the Commissioner of the Province of Groningen Mr. J. Linthorst Homan.
