Galerie du Palais, Abraham Bosse, 1637-1638 Canvas Print

Galerie du Palais, Abraham Bosse, 1637-1638 Canvas Print

Three shops in the 'Galerie du Palais' on the Ile de la Cité of Paris. On the left the bookstore, in the middle the shop where fans, gloves and other accessories are sold; on the right the lingerie store where, among other things, lace collars and cuffs are displayed. With a caption showing that the customers do not belong to the nobility, but to the well-to-do bourgeoisie, who wants to mirror themselves to the nobility in clothing and customs. A possible source of inspiration for this performance was Corneille's play 'La Galerie du Palais' (first performed in 1633). The piece opens with the same shops as the one on the print. Bosse advertises his own work in the shops on the print: in the middle a box is taken off the shelf that says 'evantails de Bosse' (fans of Bosse) ; in the bookshop a book is shown with the title 'Marianne', a play by Tristan l'Hermite (1635) in which the title page is by the hand of Bosse.
