Hell and purgatory, Jacques Callot, 1612 Canvas Print
Depiction of hell as a fenced-in, cascading pyramid, with at the very top Satan devouring souls of sinners, and on the layers beneath him many damned who are tormented by devilish beings and fireboxes. In the corners outside the pyramid: upper left souls in purgatory; at the top right of Christ who leads away a group of souls; lower left devils who lead new souls by boat; at the bottom right a rock. Here and there in the performance explanatory texts in Latin, including of various sins. Under the representation the coat of arms of the Medici and two framed texts in Italian.
