Hugo Grotius at a young age, Arnoud van Halen, 1710 - 1719 Canvas Print
Although on the back a small sticker with the name Henri IV is affixed, this is a bust of Hugo Grotius as a 15-year-old young man. He was seen from the right in a three-quarter profile and seated with his right hand in the side, the elbow turned towards the viewer. The prodigy Hugo Grotius had already completed a university study in 1599: during his stay in France in 1598 he had a doctorate in law. On this occasion, King Henry IV gave him a medallion with a portrait of the king himself, which De Groot holds here in his left hand. This medallion probably gave rise to the misidentification. The identification as Hugo Grotius at a younger age is based on a portrait engraving by Jacob de Gheyn (II) from 1599, see rijksmuseum collection, RP-P-OB-9953 and on the fact that in early descriptions of the Panpoëticon Batavum there is mention of a portrait of Hugo Grotius at a young age.
