International flag parade in front of Middelburg town hall in honor of the tree planting day, Particam, 1947 Canvas Print
The first large-scale commemoration on Walcheren, after the flooding by the Allies, took place on 4 November 1947: the Tree Planting Day. The day of remembrance was organized by the Nieuw Walcheren Foundation and was attended by Princess Juliana, Prince Bernhard and British Prime Minister Attlee. Boy Scouts hoist flags, including the flags of the Soviet Union and the Netherlands, for the international flag parade on the Grote Markt in front of a large audience in front of the town hall. The town hall of Middelburg was heavily bombed in 1940 and is being renovated in this photo, as evidenced by the scaffolding.
