Japanese lacquer box, anonymous, 1600 - 1650 Canvas Print
Brown lacquer box with bulb lid. At the back two silver hinges (5 x 2 cm). On one a man, head-on, dressed in wide trousers, mid-height boots with slack edge, a short shoulder jacket, wambuis, wide neck collar and wide-brim hat. On the other, a woman hinges, also at her feet but used to the left here. She's wearing a long dress. The left hand rests on her side. The right arm is extended to the left. The top of the hinges consists of a fantasy decoration in canopy form. At the front a silver key plate in cartouche shape and a bolt. Above it also a canopy-shaped decoration (9 x 5 cm). The paintwork pattern is composed of mother-of-pearl-framed rectangles with medallions in the middle. In the middle of the lid a silver handle (8.2 cm wide).
