In the summer months, well-to-do residents of Istanbul fled the stuffy city to cool off on the banks of the Bosphorus. The women who were part of the harem of the sultan and the grand vizier on behalf of sometimes took part in picnics and probably Vanmour wanted to depict such an occasion. Hunkiar Iskêléci was a well-known place on the Bosphorus where people met.
