Lycurgus's Treatise on the Benefits of Education, Jan Saenredam, 1596 Canvas Print

Lycurgus, the famous Spartan lawmaker, in the foreground on the right. He reads from a book. In the background a market square with spectators. Two dogs are released into the market square. One dog eats food from a container prepared for them, the other dog runs after a released hare. The performance depicts a parable by Lycurgus. The legislator wanted to demonstrate the importance of education and trained two dogs from the same litter in a different way. One dog had to hunt for his food, while the other dog was always fed. When he lets go of the two dogs on sparta's forum, the dogs behave according to their upbringing. The parable appears in Plutarch's Moralia (3:16). The print has a Latin text in the margins with explanation.
