Mannen haori met gedicht en drie jonge honden, anonymous, 1920 - 1940 Canvas Print
Haori for a man with a decoration on the lining of three young dogs playing, two brown and a white, with above it a poem by the priest Shaku Soen (1859-1919): 'Dai kushi, Joshu iwaku mu, inu iwaku wan' (About the puppy, Joshu says 'not', the dog says 'waf'), signature 'Ryogakutsu Sun', seal 'En'. It is a reference to the question to the Chinese zen priest Joshu (778-897) 'kushi bussho' ('does a puppy have the Buddha-nature'), to which he replied 'mu' ('non-something'). The 'waf' of the dog, 'wan' is written with the character for soup bowl, also 'wan', as a pun that emphasizes the non-logical character of a Zen question. Black shiny silk (habutae) with brocade woven decoration. Five family coats of arms (mon) of a well edge (igeta) motif. See also AK-RAK-2009-3-53.
