Model of a Differential Pulley, Adriaan Rosel, 1860 Canvas Print
Model of a differential hodle. A differential hoist consists of a chain without end that is led above over a set of discs of unequal diameter and below over a single disk with hook. The difference in diameter between the upper discs ensures that if the larger disc is pulled at the end, less chain is fed to the lower block via the smaller disc than is pulled away and the distance between the two blocks is reduced. This particular model has another drive wheel with a rope without an end, the move of which is transferred to the hoist via a set of gears in a ratio of 58/10.
