Model of a Gun and Carriage, anonymous, c. 1868 Canvas Print
Model of a cannon on canteen. The wooden barrel, long 39.3 cm, is of the front loader jacket-type with six sheaths, and has a trouser ring. The soul, which is not grooved, has a caliber of 24 mm. The affuit consists of two parts: the upper spout has two cheeks, the bottom of which is cut out in a curve and provided with teeth, which run in racks on the cheeks of the lower spout. The upper part can thus tilt on the bottom end. The cannon lies with its taps in the back corners of the cheeks of the upper spout, so that the piece is lifted up when the upper spout is tilted forward, and sinks when it is tilted backwards; the upper affuit is provided with a bucket in front for a counterbalance. A set of rods between the chasle and the lower spout holds the gun in a horizontal position, and is connected to an eleveer in the lower spout for vertical aiming. A second set of rods on the cheeks of the upper spout is connected with sliders, which move in slots on the cheeks of the lower spout: these stabilize the upper spout and also serve as a braking device for the recuul. The bottom spout consists of no more than a tray with side cheeks, on which the racks and slots. The cannon is fired into the upper position and sinks under the influence of the recuul between the cheeks of the lower spout, where it can be loaded.
