Model of a Javanese Marketplace, anonymous, c. 1830 - c. 1860 Canvas Print
Model of a Javanese market stable, in the original housing. The scene takes place around two elongated market buildings, built of pillars (pendopo's, typical of Javanese architecture, but these are equipped with Dutch tiled roofs). At the rear of the two buildings is the building of the Chinese market master. In and around the pendopo's there are 153 figures: Chinese, Malabar, Javanese, and other inhabitants of the archipelago. There are countless hawkers, saleswomen seated on the ground, musicians of gamelan orchestras, and individual figures who visit the market. On the left a procession of Javanese court officials, including a regent (bupati), wedono and mantri, dancers precede them. On the right side we see a Dutch couple.
