Model of a Paddle Box and Wheel, anonymous, 1845 Canvas Print

Model of the starboard cog box against a part of the ship's wall, with a cycloidal shovel wheel or impeller wheel. The scoop boards are divided into narrow strips, which are attached to the blasting irons according to cycloidal lines, so that they touch the water successively, creating a minimum of vibrations. The axle of the impeller wheel does not extend to the cog beam on the outside of the cog box, but only protrudes a small part off board and is supported by an outdoor support device (see NG-MC-551); as a result, the continuation of the shaft is less, so that hot running is less common. The blasting irons are mounted on a thick iron plate on the shaft. Scale 1:20 (derived).
