Model of Part of a Floating Dry Dock, Royal Factory for Steam and Other Tools, 1877 - 1878 Canvas Print
The dock consisted of two halves, one of which is partly represented by the model. It is made entirely of brass, the construction consisting of trusses of corner iron, reinforced with diagonal dressings and sheet metal. Bulkheads divide the soil into watertight compartments, which are filled to sink the dock; the side cabinets, which become wider downwards, basically remain dry and contribute to stability. The model has a steam engine with a Galloway-piped Cornwall boiler on deck under a sunroof, which powers two centrifugal pumps for pumping out. On deck there are horizontal adjusting shears that are operated with winches, for straightening the ship; the ship was then sheared with kim blocks and tumblers. Scale 1:20 (scale on model).
