Painting with a depiction of a monarch from the Malla dynasty, anonymous, 1700 - 1725 Canvas Print
Painting with a representation of a monarch from the Malla dynasty. Princes of the Malla dynasty consider themselves incarnations of the Hindu god Vishnu. That is why they allow themselves to be portrayed with a throne heaven consisting of omelkaar winding snakes, as is also customary for Vishnu. The portrait of the Malla prince Bhupatendra (1695-1721) at the bottom of a roll painting in the National Museum in New Delhi (See P. Pal, The Arts of Nepal Pt. II: Painting, Leiden, 1978, pp. 126-129, no. 151) seems to be a reduced version of this painting. The portrait of this monarch, painted on a wall in the palace of Bhadgaon (Idem, pl. 193) is also very similar to the painting in the present case. (very damaged condition).
