Pivot and Two Compass Cards, J.M. Kleman & Zoon, 1825 Canvas Print
Compass pen with ruby tip on a wooden pedestal, with rose. The rose has a brass cap in the middle with hole for the pin at the bottom: the turning of the rose was improved by the materials used, while the fluctuation was reduced by the propagation of the friction surface of the ruby. The rose, which is badly damaged, can be rotated within an outer edge, on which a shell is applied in degrees per quadrant; this was to compensate for the magnetic variation (the angle between the actual north and the magnetic north). The second rose is of the same type, but the cap is provided with a gemstone, presumably agate. With two compass roses.
