The oval is placed in an ornament frame with flower vases and left and right a winged female figure that emerges from a horn of plenty. In the middle above Clusius' family coat of arms. Latin caption in cartouche in the middle of the portrait. Carolus Clusius, actually Charles de l'Écluse, was a Flemish scholar, physician and botanist. He played a major role in the spread of the potato and tulip in Europe.
