Charles of Orléans (1522-1545), third and youngest son of Francis I, was given the title of 'Duke of Orléans' in 1536. In 1539 he married Maria, the eldest daughter of Charles V. They would take over the administration of the Netherlands from the governor Mary of Hungary. Charles of Orleans is depicted as a rider in full armor, on a horse galloping to the left. At the top left the coat of arms of France with the duke's crown, broken by the bar stem as a younger son.
