Bust of Ludolf van Ceulen (Hildesheim, 28 January 1540 - Leiden, 31 December 1610) at the age of 56, with a loose collar, in oval with edge lettering, encased in ornament frame with rollwork and weapons. Below the portrait is an image of a circle describing the number pi. Under the performance a four-line Dutch caption. Van Ceulen was a fencer and mathematician. According to Meursius in 1599, according to the resolutions of curators on 10 January 1600, he was appointed by Prince Maurice together with Simon Fransz. van Merwen appointed professor in the 'Nederduytsche mathematicque' in Leiden. Calculated the number pi (the ratio between the circumference and centerline of a circle) to 35 decimal places.
