Punchbowl, anonymous, 1851 Canvas Print
An interior scene is depicted on both sides of the spherical porcelain pot. On one side, two slender female figures are depicted, handing a wrapped qin (lute) to a child, a representation from the Chinese story `The History of the Western Chamber'. On the other side, a high-ranking soldier is depicted, flanked by two saber-wearing guards and a kneeling man in civilian clothing, a scene from military history. The slightly spherical lid is decorated with The Hundred Children, a common symbolization of happiness in China. The base ring of the pot is set in a smooth, curved, silver rim with asymmetrical leaves in relief at the four corners, which are curl and form legs at the bottom. The leaves are flanked by C-volutes forming the lower margin; in the middle of each side they are connected by a leaf. The top edge is set in an upright, slightly constricted, smooth, silver frame. This is bounded at the top by a straight profile and at the bottom by an edge, which is made up of a motif of a hanging leaf with a lying C-volute on both sides, which repeats four times. Just below the top edge are the two upright, silver ears, each consisting of two asymmetrically curling leaves with small flowers, connected by a smooth handle. The lid is topped by a silver handle in the shape of two leaves from which a C-shaped twig rises. On the flat top of the top edge is engraved Doctrina et Amicitia to her Treasurer JR Schuymer October 1, 1814-1864.
