Roemer with an allegory of the blessings of Peace and Freedom, anonymous, c. 1675 - c. 1700 Canvas Print
Spun from a wire, slightly concave foot. The trunk that is occupied with three prodding rows of large flat blackberry studs is blown as one whole with the curved chalice. The transition from the trunk to the calyx indicated by a ribbed thread. On the chalice in grisaille an allegory of the blessings of Peace and Freedom, personified by the two female figures in the foreground, both leaned against martial trophies of standards and weapons, with a vanquished one at their feet; peace with an olive branch and a great cornucopia; the Freedom with scepter and hat. On her left is a man sitting at a lectern, on which is a large book, on the right is a man with tons in the working. At sea, large ships are under sail, about to set sail; smaller ships are at anchor or have been pulled onto the beach, two sloops bring people off and on. Above it in grisaille, red and silver yellow, the coats of arms of the Republic, the province of Holland and stadholder William III. Under the coat of arms of Holland hangs the coat of arms of Leiden, two crossed keys; among that of the Republic an unknown coat of arms: divided 1 an anvil, 2 three keys.
