Room 228 (M217) seen to the west with passage to room 235. Arrangement of two altarpieces in painting stands made to the design of P.J.H. Cuypers. From about 1907 to about 1927, 16th century paintings were exhibited in this room. The painted decorations consisted mainly of medieval motifs. Twelve cartels contain the names of Dutch painters. A spell band, not seen in this photo, gives the following sonnet of P. van Veen: "Der menschen cloeck ingenuity noyt stouter Const produced, If those den Mensch, end' all that shooting body go away Oft sijn ghedaent loses, with welcken oft with quijnen, With a uijtbeeldend stuck long life gheven tries. Maer did not like the Painting, nor anyone, No different, if that's what we're suggesting, Wesen van den gheen, who lost w' here? Oh, no, she suggests the eye, even if they dosh Mensch oyt Ce sijn, oft cannen sijn, op Aerde, oft in de locht.' The west wing of the museum has four painting rooms with overhead light (260-263) that are completely equal to the halls in the east wing (225-228) Only the painted decoration of the friezes and vaults is different in every room. The Stuers afb. 51 gives a picture of the painting in two adjacent halls in the west wing. Plate no 13 in the book of the Stuers shows fragements of the mosaic floor: D room 228, E room 227, F room 225, G room 226. The figures are formed from black yellow and white lines, while the background is yellow and red, or red and green.
