Scene with a party in a tavern or living room, Esaias Boursse, 1662 Canvas Print

In a large room with high walls on the right and at the back, and on the left a high passage to a garden, a group of men and women is drawn. Two servants are also present. The floor looks like loam. The furniture is simple in style and consists of three wooden chairs with high backrest, a round table with bowl; a layer of round piece of furniture with raised edge in the form of a box, on which there is also a bowl; a three-legged object contains a bowl of ear – it could be a wagging or spitting pot. On the left is a European man dressed in a long coat that reaches to the knee, with the collar closed under the chin. He's wearing shoes. Over his right shoulder a bandelier on which on his left hip hangs a sheath with the gene. His outstretched right hand holds a wide-brimmed felt hat. With his left hand, he raises a wine glass. To his right against the back wall is a European woman sitting on a chair. She is dressed in a wide-sleeved blouse with a wide flat collar. The top of the double skirt is raised above the knees. The hair is combed back, with curls on the temples. In front of her belly, she holds a wine glass with both hands. There's another woman sitting in the chair across from her. We only see her partially from behind: the sleeve around her left arm and skirt around her left leg. A slipper is drawn on her left foot. There's a man behind this chair. He leans on the backrest with both hands. He is dressed in a short pleated skirt, under which the legs of knee-length trousers come out, and wears a short jacket with long sleeves and collar; at the bottom of the waist, the edge of a wide blouse protrudes. The sleeves of that blouse also extend from the sleeves of the jacket with patches. He's wearing shoes. Over his right shoulder hangs an embroidered bandelier on which a sheath with the thread hangs on his left hip. On his head a felt hat, a feather hangs over the edge. On the right of a chair against the side wall is another man. He wears short skirt (trousers), under which the legs of knee-length trousers come out, and a short jacket with long sleeves and collar, closed from the front; Underneath is a blouse. Patches of the sleeves of that blouse hang from the sleeves of the jacket. He's got shoes on and a top felt hat on his. With his right hand, he raises a wine glass. Against the back wall in the corner of the room is a Eurasian or Singalese woman. She wears a foot-length wrap skirt (redda) and a blouse with wide sleeves (hatte). At the front right of the side wall is a servant. He wears only a hip rug down to the feet (lungi) and the muscular upper body is uncovered; His earlobes are stretched. Clothing and facial features do not give a definitive answer as to its origin. Sheet 116 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
