Ship Compass, Bramah & Sons, c. 1825 - c. 1829 Canvas Print

Compass in a compass house. The glass is gone. The cylindrical copper compass boiler is weighted with a lead ring around it, which can be adjusted in height. The cardanus ring has been replaced by an unusual suspension: the entire kettle with weight rests on the compass pin, which balances with a sphere on top of a rod in the bottom of the compass house; a spring is fitted in the bar, which absorbs vertical shocks. The rose has a transparent mica center; the main and main intermediates are indicated and divided into eight on the paper outer edge. The compass housing has a pendulum on the inside, which can be read as a clinometer through a viewing glass on the front. At the top, the pendulum has the compass pointer: because the compass cauldron is suspended at a single point, it can rotate and the course must be read from the quadrant pointer, which follows the pendulum movement of the boiler but does not rotate. Two small doors on the sides give access under the compass boiler, in order to be able to disassemble the compass. A spare spring has been included. The compass pen has been broken in the past and a new one has been added to the compass; it is in turn broken, the old one has been repaired and put back in place.
