Slaughter of the sperm whale stranded between Zandvoort and Wijk aan Zee, 1762, Johannes Swertner, 1762 Canvas Print
A sperm whale (cachelot) washed up on the beach between Wijk aan Zee and Zandvoort on 20 February 1762 is dissected and processed by a group of men. Men with cleavers and axes stand on the sperm whale to cut off the bacon and drain the brain. On the right, men pull a rope to pull the bacon off the animal. Behind them is a windshield for the same purpose. The bacon is loaded onto ready carts. In the front left, two men sharpen their knives. The print is provided with a legend 1-14 with an explanation of the work.
