Overview of all stadholders in the Netherlands, from William I to William V. The stadholders stand in chronological order on the steps of a large staircase in a palace. At the top of William I who is murdered by Balthasar Gerards. Then Maurits, Frederik Hendrik, Willem II with Andries and Cornelis Bicker as representatives of Amsterdam, William III and William IV. After William IV, the guardians of William V follow: Anna and Lodewijk Ernst. At the bottom, William V is the last of the stadholders to step down the stairs on a stone marked Oranienstein, referring to Oranienstein Castle in Germany where William left, after recognizing the Batavian Republic as part of provisions of the Peace of Amiens, on March 27, 1802. He is assisted by Napoleon I and Frederick William III. In the caption a statement of the performance in six lines. At the bottom right 'Proof of proof.'.
