The Battle of Solebay, 7 June 1672, just after two o'clock in the afternoon, as seen from the northwest: left part, Willem van de Velde (I), 1673 Canvas Print
The Battle of Solebay, June 7, 1672, just after two o'clock in the afternoon, seen from the northwest: left part. This two-volume drawing depicts a moment from the Battle of Solebay in 1672. In this opening battle of the third Anglo-Dutch War, the State fleet led by Admiral De Ruyter fought against the combined Anglo-French fleet off the coast of Suffolk, near Solebay. As with previous naval battles, Willem van de Velde sailed aboard his galleon on the Dutch side. The Battle of Solebay is in full swing. The left-hand page shows, among other things, the Dolphin, the ship of Lieutenant-Admiral Willem Joseph Baron Van Ghent who would be killed in this battle. The burning ship Royal James is partly on the left and partly on the right part. This frigate of Admiral Edward Mountagu, Earl of Sandwich, was hit by a Dutch burner around two o'clock in the afternoon. The Royal Prince, the flagship of the Duke of York that was so damaged before noon that the duke had to transfer his flag to St. Michael, was originally placed by Van de Velde in the upper right above the south axis of the wind rose, but was covered by him with a piece of paper.
