The Death of Adonis, Giovanni-Martino dei Boni, 1800 Canvas Print
Marble relief by Antonio Canova (which is located in Possagno), with the depiction of Venus confessing, accompanied by complaining Eroten, the dead Adonis. Adonis was killed by the wild boar and is sprawled on the ground. Venus plunges from the sky down on her lover's dead body. The performance is an almost literal representation of the corpse complaint of Adonis' death by the ancient Greek poet Bion. According to Bion's elegy, Adonis' blood produced roses, which are represented here on both sides of his body. He's wrapped in sheets.
