The Doctor as Devil, Hendrick Goltzius (workshop of), 1587 Canvas Print
In a house, a man stands in front of his bed, family members around him. A doctor stands in front of him with his arm outstretched. In the room on the right next to it you can see what happened after the man healed (see the first three prints of the series): his relatives refused to pay the doctor for his services. In the foreground a diabolical figure, standing amid medical manuals and instruments. Latin and Greek texts engraved under the performance and (outside the plate edge but on the same sheet) a printed Dutch text, explaining that the doctor is treated like a devil when it comes to payment for his services. This print is part of a series of four prints depicting how the doctor is considered and appreciated during his visit to a sick person: upon entering as a god, after the first aid as an angel, in healing as a human being and when to pay as a devil.
