The doctor as god, Hendrick Goltzius (workshop of), 1596 - 1652 Canvas Print
In a house, a man lies sick in bed, family members dismayed and praying around him. A doctor feels his pulse. In the room on the right next to and through the window you can see what happened to the man: he hurt his head and leg in a fall from a ladder. In the foreground a Christ-like figure, standing amid medical manuals and instruments. Latin and Greek texts engraved under the performance and (outside the plate edge but on the same sheet) a printed Dutch text, explaining that the doctor is brought in as a god when one's life hangs by a thread. This print is part of a series of four prints depicting how the doctor is considered and appreciated during his visit to a sick person: upon entering as a god, after the first aid as an angel, in healing as a human being and when to pay as a devil.
