The Lamentation, Meester Tilman (attributed to), c. 1500 Canvas Print

On one ground lies Christ stretched out on a line between Mary and Mary Magdalene. In the background a small Calvary, on which a crop. Mary sits on her lap with the thorn-crowned head of Christ. She keeps her hands folded and has her head slightly to the side. Christ's eyes are closed, the mouth is half opened, and the pierced hands lie limply along the body. At his feet, Magdalene kneels, who holds up the line with the left hand, while she wipes her tears with the right with a slip of the long narrow cloth, which hangs down from her turban. Mary is dressed in a robe with round neck cut, the cloak that has been struck over the head falls back slightly, making her headscarf clearly visible. Magdalena wears a wide skirt and a narrow yak, which closes in front of the chest and under which the shirt is still visible. The short puff sleeves, trimmed with fringe, pass into wide flared sleeves; at the right wrist you can still see part of the sleeve of an under-robe. On the partly loose, partly braided hair, which hangs in a large loop on her shoulder, she wears a turban decorated with a jewel, which is held under the chin by a scarf and the end of which she holds up in the right hand.
