The Rat Poison Seller, Ambrosius van Swol, c. 1660 Canvas Print
The man stands on a square plinth with the right leg forward, holds a cylindrical cage in his left hand on a long stick and in the somewhat protruded right probably a packet of poison, which he offers for sale. Next to him walks a boy, who has a box hanging from a belt, which runs over the right shoulder, a box in front of him, the lid of which he lifts with one hand and rests the other on the box. In the cage, on which three dead rats hang, a rat is eating and a second one jumps up against the bars. On the left shoulder of the man sits a rat on a chain, the last link of which is attached to his right little finger. He is wearing a fur hat and is wearing a buttoned-up shirt and puff pants. Over this a fur-lined, at the bottom somewhat frayed, half-open cloak with stitched tresses, which also appear on the split half-sleeves. He also wears stockings and shoes. A weitas of fur hangs from a sash over his shoulder; around the waist a sash, in which a heart catcher is inserted, decorated at the top with a miniature head. The boy with a wide brimed hat wears over shirt and puff pants a frayed, partially open yak, furthermore stockings and shoes. The box with merchandise, shows on the front left the coat of arms of Utrecht and on the right that of Amersfoort.
